Noise Exclusive: Drift Off To A Better Existence With WAYSIDE’s “In A Place”

Who says just because it’s December you can’t discover any more new music? Sure all the Spotify lists have been unwrapped but we still have four more weeks of 2020 to impress you.

Speaking of impressive, have you been formally introduced to Australian act WAYSIDE, yet? With their chilled out alt-emo vibes similar to the likes of Turnover, Citizen and Title Fight, the pair of Thomas Davenport and Josh Ehmer are making strong waves as we head into the new year.

Teaming up with The Noise today, the talented two-piece are premiering their brand new music video for their latest single “In A Place.”

Elaborating on the moody new song, Davenport states, “‘In A Place’ was very close to not even being a song. Josh and I had already finished writing the record, but there was this one guitar riff that Josh had written that I couldn’t get out of my head. The night before I flew to LA, we recorded 2 bars of it, wrote drums for those two bars, then copy and pasted it the whole thing 100 times and exported it.”

He adds, “On my flight I had this playing on repeat to come up with a vocal rhythm and melody. After a few weeks of refinement, I wrote all of the lyrics on my flight home. Never before had we even considered using the same piece of music for the verse, pre-chorus and chorus. This was an exciting challenge for us and we feel that it definitely paid off. I think knowing we had the record written already, there was more creative and experimental freedom. It didn’t matter if this idea failed miserably, so there was more margin for error than before.”

“At its core,” the singer/songwriter concludes, ‘‘‘In A Place’ is about growth and challenging your own beliefs that might have held you back for so long – being able to reflect on a situation from some time ago and recognizing how your thoughts and feelings can change through personal growth and letting go of those fears and anxieties. But on the surface, there are also strong parallel themes of courage and love. At the time I was wanting to retrace my steps, hoping to be given the opportunity to do things a little differently.”
