Weird Wednesday: 1/7/15

Calling all nerds, fart sniffers and radical groove seekers: Happy new year and welcome to the first 2015 edition of Weird Wednesday! As always, we have a great jam-packed lineup for you all today that we’re sure you’re just going to love, love, love!

Now, if you’re new to this, let us explain: By “weird” we simply mean we’ll be featuring a few tracks you metalcore kids might not usually listen to. Why is that you ask? Well, that’s because the songs below do not have any breakdowns, screams or whatever the hell THIS is. We know it sounds scary, but please just trust us on this one.

That said, be sure to check out what’s below and let us know on Twitter @thenoise which songs you liked the most.

Enjoy and we’ll see you next week!

The Thin Bloods - “Peter Was a Virus”

As most of you hopefully know by now (especially since we mentioned it in the intro, and because, well, duh), it’s a brand new year. And being that it’s a brand new year, we’ve decided to do something we’ve never done before here on Weird Wednesday. We’re going to feature the same band twice. Yes, we know it sounds crazy, but ladies and gentlemen we’re never going to get anywhere in life if we don’t take risks. Now, all that aside, “Perter Was a Virus” is a blistering new jam by the Tempe, Arizona street punks, The Thin Bloods. And yes, as we alluded to earlier, we did first introduce these guys’ zesty sound to the world of weird back in August of 2014. But does all that really matter? What’s most important is that this song rips and we think more people need to hear it.

New Swears - “Stay Gold”

Every time we turn on New Swears’ record Junkfood Forever, Bedtime Whenever we immediately get the sudden urge to drop everything we’re doing and start to party. So, the fact that we were able to complete this week’s post in time is nothing short of a miracle. That said, whether it was their intention or not, New Swears has easily become our go-to beach party band. Who cares if they’re from Ottwa where there aren’t very many beaches around, these dudes make us want to scream cowabunga at the top of our lungs and ride a wave or two.

Lazyeyes - “Islip”

Some like to call it dream pop, others showgaze. For us, Lazyeyes is a groovy fun-filled band trying to create music that makes you feel warm inside. Case in point, “Islip.” Incorporating a laid-back yet upbeat sound similar to Interpol and Julian Casablancas, “Islip” is a toe-tapping kind of vibe we’re really into and think you will be too. If you dig it as much as we do, check out their just-released EP. New Year which is available now on Bandcamp.

Smile and Burn - “Expectations”

Out of Berlin, Germany, Smile and Burn may just be our new favorite power-pop band. We mean just listen to them! Drawing similarities to Motion City SoundtrackBilly Talent and quite possibly The Gaslight Anthem as well, what’s not to love about them? Oh and did we also mention, they have an interesting fascination with posing in the nude? Yeah, well, they also have that going for them too. To check out their extremely fun and catchy-as-fuck record, Action Action, head here.

Feral Trash - “P.A.R.A.N.O.I.D”

Almost like a second coming of 80’s new wave punk, Feral Trash has transported our ears to a much better place with their single "P.A.R.A.N.O.I.D." Now at first, we’ll admit, the subject of paranoia seemed a little played out. Being the topic of so many bands over the years - the most memorable being Green Day and Black Sabbath - we we’re a little skeptical about this track. However, after hearing the style in which this New Brunswick trio approached it, we’re all about it! To hear more from Feral Trash, you can check out their latest release Trashfiction on Bandcamp now.
